What is Universal Credit, and what's happening?
Universal Credit (UC) is being introduced to replace the old benefits system with something simpler, to better support people living in the UK. The shift to Universal Credit is happening in stages and is expected to be completed by the end of 2025.
Have you received a letter about moving your benefits to Universal Credit?
We know that some of you may have heard about or received a letter about changes to Universal Credit – this process is called ‘managed migration’. We want to make sure you understand it and get the support you need.
What is managed migration?
Managed migration refers to the process where people still receiving the old benefits will be moved to Universal Credit. These benefits, known as legacy benefits, include:
- Housing Benefit
- Child Tax Credit
- Working Tax Credit
- Income Support
- Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA)
- Income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)
If you’re currently receiving one or more of these benefits, you’ll get or may have already received a migration notice letter. This letter will be to let you know that to continue receiving support, you must apply for Universal Credit by the deadline provided (which is three months from the letter’s date).
