Money and debt can be a cause of significant stress, impacting on people’s ability to manage their lives, jobs, homes and families. Our One Money team aims to support people to mange these issues. From helping customers find the best value energy provider and ways to furnish their homes on a budget, to opening the bank accounts they need to secure employment, to providing accurate and up-to-date benefits advice and budgeting tips, it’s about empowering people to take control of their finances before they hit crisis point.
People dealing with money issues, including benefits, budgeting, banking and debts and the complex paperwork that goes with them, often feel out of their depth and so bury their heads in the sand. Our specialist financial inclusion team is able to give advice on all aspects of debt and budgeting up to court action and insolvency including Debt Relief Orders (DROs) and bankruptcy, as well as assisting with benefit enquiries, applications and first stage appeals. And where we’re not best-placed to support people, we help skill-up front-line staff from a range of partner agencies across the city to help improve people’s financial skills, confidence and resilience.
I was apprehensive at first taking my bag full of unopened bills and letters because I didn’t know what to expect but after the first appointment I left feeling like a weight had been lifted.
“I was apprehensive at first taking my bag full of unopened bills and letters to meet with Wayne (One Money) because I didn’t know what to expect but after the first appointment I left feeling like a weight had been lifted. We made a plan of what I needed to do first like setting up direct debits and contacting catalogues and utilities to set up payment plans. Once we’d started the ball rolling, the letters stopped piling up and the phone calls stopped. It was such a massive relief because when you’re in debt it’s constantly on your mind and you end up shoving letters away but you can only bury your head in the sand for so long.”
