We think having places where people want to live is about more than just housing. It’s about being able to enjoy all the opportunities on offer, including cultural events, venues and employment in the creative industries. We also recognise the role that culture can play in reducing social isolation and improving well-being. That’s why we work with organisations across the city to make sure local people have the chance to enjoy the opportunities on offer and run a cultural ambassadors programme to involve local volunteers in encouraging people to access cultural venues and events.
Our partnership with the Royal Exchange Theatre began in 2014 with Photographic Party Time, a pilot project using the arts to explore social isolation. We have continued to build this relationship and are part-way through On Top of the World, a three-year partnership project funded through a £60,000 JP Getty Foundation grant to address social isolation and improve the wellbeing of older, single males in four of our tower blocks. Our cultural ambassadors are now also members of the theatre’s Community Link scheme, which gives them access to free theatre tickets for a year.
"Without you guys doing this, half of us would never speak to each other."
"Happiness falls lightly at Hopton (tower block) but worth the wait."
"I come to these sessions to get away from the voices in my head telling me to cut myself."

As an older citizen, I don’t get to go out much. Going to HOME was a great day out for me to socialise with my friends and see a fabulous theatre show. Thank you!
