Throughout the coldest winter months of 2017 we worked with contractors including Sheridan Lifts, Marley Eternit, and New Charter Building Company to provide residents in our neighbourhoods with items such as warm clothes, gloves and thermal flasks as part of our Winter Warmers project.
This project initially ran from just one location, but once the scale of the demand was realised we spread the service to operate from our Community Grocers in the Anson estate, Coverdale & Newbank, Gorton and Fallowfield.
The Winter Warmer packs, which were kindly donated by the contractors, included fleeces, thermal clothing, blankets, socks, gloves, snoods, hats, thermos flasks, and torches. We’d like to thank our contractors for their donations, as well as the hard working volunteers that run the Community Grocers for their help.
James, who received one of the packs, explained that he heard about the project through a One Money Adviser who thought he could benefit from the items on offer:
“I was struggling with the cold, and I couldn’t afford to use an electric heater. I had no gas supply to the property and it was really tough.
“The fleece and the hot water bottle brought me great comfort and kept some of the coldness at bay. The flask helped to make sure I had hot drinks during the day and it meant that I wasn’t over using electric for the kettle.
“Having the reassurance that there is help and advisers out there that see the struggles we have is very important to me.”
After the successful response in 2017, we now hope to run the Winter Warmer project again later this year. We will be working with teams across One Manchester to identify vulnerable members of the community, and reach out to our customers who require emergency support.
