How quickly the time flies! It's already been a year since the launch of the fantastically successful Anson Community Shop, in Rusholme, and on Thursday we saw the opening of a brand new community shop based in Cornbrook House.

The new shop, supported by Coverdale and Newbank Community Association, is a food project in association with Healthy Me Healthy Communities which aims to give local people in one of the most deprived wards in the city the opportunity to buy food, toiletries and household essentials at hugely discounted prices. Membership is available to people living within a 15-minute walk of the shop, and members pay just £2.50 for a basket full of food items worth more than £12 which have been kindly donated by Fare-Share, Tesco and other local stores.

The launch of the shop was attended by members of the community, Coverdale and Newbank Community Association volunteers and was officially opened by Cllr Bernard Priest and Cllr Mavis Smitheman, who cut the ceremonial ribbon to open the doors for the community.

Rich Browning, chief executive of Healthy Me Healthy Communities, said: “This is such a fantastic project and hits so many of the issues people are facing like poverty, cooking on a budget, loneliness and mental health, as well as reducing the amount of food sent to landfill.”

The project is staffed entirely by a team of volunteers who give up their own time to help run the shop. One such volunteer is Elaine Lovesey, chair of Coverdale and Newbank Community Association, who explained the reasons behind opening this new shop: “There is a huge need in this area; not only will the project help people living in poverty but it will bring our community together.

"This is the dream that everyone wanted. We have got a deprived estate and people do struggle, the benefit changes have caused lots of problems for a lot of families. We've had to go through strenuous checks to get the shop open, but now that it's open it's lovely.

"Our passion is to get food out to people so that they have food on the table at the end of the month, and make them feel like they're gaining things rather than just simply keeping a roof over their head."

The shop will be open to members from 11am until 2pm every Thursday. For more information please contact our Customer Involvement team at customerinvolvement@onemanchester.co.uk or call Belinda on 0161 230 1084.
